Football supporters honor crash victims at Middlesbrough match

During the moment of reflection, images of the police officers were shown on a large display.

Fans and players from the football community have honored two Cleveland Police officers who died following a collision in Teesside.

Police Constables Matthew Blades and Tom Clough died in a head-on collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough on August 22. Their police vehicle collided with another car travelling in the wrong direction, resulting in the deaths of five occupants in the second vehicle.

Before the Championship game at Riverside Stadium, players from Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion observed a minute's silence to remember the officers, while their pictures were shown on a screen.

On the preceding Friday evening, Hartlepool United also observed a two-minute silence prior to their home National League fixture against Eastleigh.

Prior to the match, Middlesbrough FC released a statement indicating their intention to acknowledge the commitment and hard work of both officers, and to recognize the Cleveland Police force's role in safeguarding and assisting the local community.

The club further noted that the dedication exhibited by officers and staff, often under difficult and demanding circumstances, is crucial for ensuring the safety of residents and fostering a sense of security in their homes, communities, and local areas.

Last Saturday, PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough lost their lives in a crash close to Middlesbrough.

Earlier this week, 17 individuals were taken into custody as part of the investigation into the collision, bringing the total number of arrests to 24.

The individuals in the other car, a Passat—Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, and Cole Robert Worthy, 17—also perished.

Middlesbrough mayor Chris Cooke stated on Radio 4's Today programme that Cleveland Police was performing "exceptionally well," despite a shortfall in necessary funding.

He pointed out that the force had experienced a reduction of over 10 percent in full-time equivalent police officers, while other areas had seen increases exceeding 20 percent, which he considered unfair.

He asserted that the current funding model, based on population sizes, is not beneficial to anyone and should not be the sole determinant.
