Mourinho concerned by three-week international break for Real Madrid

Real Madrid's coach, Jose Mourinho, has expressed apprehension regarding the upcoming three-week international interval in September, emphasizing the significant period his players will spend away from the club.

Mourinho stated that the international break is a source of worry for him, noting its considerable length.

Before the team's La Liga home fixture against Malaga on Sunday at 16:00 BST, Mourinho indicated his primary concern was for players who join their national teams but do not get to play.

He explained that he is less concerned about players who participate in matches for their national squads, but those who travel to join their national teams without actually playing are what truly troubles him.

Mourinho added that the club would need to determine how to manage and work with the remaining players, as having his squad members unavailable for three weeks presents a challenging situation.

The initial international hiatus of the 2026-27 men's football season next month will extend for an additional week compared to previous years, as the customary October break has been eliminated.

Over recent years, Fifa typically scheduled five main international windows annually, occurring in March, June, September, October, and November.

However, instead of distinct breaks in September and October, there will now be a continuous three-week period for international matches stretching from late September into early October, during which national teams will participate in four games instead of the usual two. The established international breaks in November, March, and June will remain unchanged.

Several factors contributed to this alteration, including the 2026 World Cup final being scheduled for July 19th, marking the latest date for a summer World Cup since 1966. Player well-being and logistical travel considerations were also significant aspects taken into account when these modifications were implemented.

Mourinho clarified that while he fully respects players' choices and aims not to overstate the issue, his concern stems from the frequent injuries players sustain during these breaks and immediately upon returning from international duty.

He acknowledged his apprehension but conceded that this is the current structure, leaving little room for modification.

The Portuguese coach has previously spoken extensively about the demanding summer experienced by the World Cup participants in his Real Madrid squad, including players like Jude Bellingham, Marc Cucurella, and Kylian Mbappe.

He confirmed that the club is actively working to manage their physical demands to minimize the potential for injuries.

During his pre-match press conference, Mourinho also offered considerable praise for Bellingham, emphasizing his vital contribution to the team that extends beyond his offensive prowess.

Mourinho described Bellingham as an exceptional player, incredibly crucial to the squad.

He lauded Bellingham's mental fortitude, tactical understanding, proficiency in winning back possession, pressing opponents, and effective attacking play.

Mourinho remarked that while discussions often revolve around Kylian, Vini [Vinicius Jr], and Jude, he is genuinely pleased with every player in the squad.

Mourinho additionally shared his perspective on discussions surrounding the Ballon d'Or, asserting that winning either the Champions League or the World Cup should not automatically position a player as the leading candidate for the individual accolade.
