Norris extends McLaren contract until 2030, citing team's slow start

Lando Norris has committed his future to McLaren, signing a contract extension that will see him remain with the team until at least the conclusion of the 2030 season, a decision he described as straightforward.

Norris stated that agreeing to the new agreement, which secures his position with McLaren for an extended period, was "quite an easy yes for me."

The current world champion, whose new long-term deal was announced on Saturday, indicated that he did not explore options with other teams before committing to the organisation where he began his Formula 1 career in 2019.

Norris revealed in an interview with BBC Sport that although there had been approaches from other parties, he had no desire to join a different team or spend his time with other people.

He added that, for these reasons, it was likely one of the simplest choices he had made since entering Formula 1.

The British driver was under no pressure to finalise his commitment to McLaren, as his previous contract still had over a year remaining.

Nevertheless, he explained that the possibility of an extension had become a "topic of conversation over the last four months or so, but very loosely in the background," and he readily accepted the terms.

Norris attributes his allegiance to McLaren to the strong relationships he has cultivated within the team, particularly with chief executive officer Zak Brown and team principal Andrea Stella, and their shared history.

Following Norris's Formula 1 debut in 2019, the team faced several years of competitive struggles, until their performance saw a rapid improvement after Stella's promotion at the close of 2022.

The team secured consecutive constructors' championships in 2024 and 2025, breaking a drought that had lasted since 1998, and Norris himself clinched the drivers' title in the previous year.

The 26-year-old expressed that having persevered with them and then achieved success certainly made him feel that he did not want to leave, noting that they had not given up on him, and he had not given up on them.

He believes this situation fosters a very strong connection among everyone at the team, and he hopes that bond will endure as strongly as it is now until he retires from his Formula 1 career.

Norris acknowledged that retirement is still a distant prospect and not something he wishes to contemplate, but he believes they are currently in their strongest position ever, despite a challenging start to the current season, and is confident they can overcome any difficulties together.

McLaren began this season significantly behind the performance levels they had demonstrated throughout 2024 and 2025, as they grappled with adapting to the new Formula 1 regulations introduced this year.

However, Norris affirmed that this initial setback only increased his desire to remain with the team.

He stated that such a situation precisely does not cause him to leave his current position or affect any other aspect of his decision.

He maintains that he continues to enjoy working and striving to overcome challenging periods with his current colleagues, and he prefers not to navigate such difficulties with anyone else.
