One evening in early August, farmer Daniel Sizer received a notification on his phone.

This message, sent by his local water authority, indicated that river levels, despite being low, had recovered sufficiently to permit one night of irrigation.

Sizer's farm, now in its fourth generation and located in Suffolk, had experienced almost no rainfall for nearly three months, a situation common across much of southern England.

He demonstrated the state of his remaining pea and wheat crops across his 300-hectare property.

Daniel explained that the absence of water in the river had led to the complete destruction of half his harvest.

Previously, in July, the Environment Agency (EA) had temporarily forbidden Daniel and thousands of other farmers from extracting river water for their crops, as river levels had fallen so drastically that further abstraction threatened aquatic wildlife.

However, Daniel's experience highlights a more recent and concerning trend.

The increasing frequency of heatwaves, significantly reduced rainfall, which may recur over successive summers due to climate change, and anticipated growth in water demand all suggest that England could eventually face a water shortage.

This could lead to England experiencing a daily deficit of five billion litres in its public water supply by 2055, an amount nearly equivalent to filling Wembley Stadium four and a half times every day. This strain on England's water supply, driven by low rainfall, high temperatures, and demand, is more pronounced than in other parts of the UK.

This current situation is a stark contrast to John Keats's sentiment in 1818, when he lamented the constant rain, writing that living in a perpetually overcast country was unbearable and yearned for more precipitation.

Yet, what precisely is causing England's water supply to be so imperilled? And what measures can be taken to safeguard its future?

In the 1980s, water consumption rates in England and Denmark were comparable, but this is no longer the case.

According to Danva, Denmark's water and wastewater industry body, Danish residents now use 97 litres of water per person daily, while the average daily consumption per person in England stands at 136.5 litres.

Nicci Russell, who heads Waterwise, an organization promoting water efficiency, points out that the amount of water used per person has, on average, effectively doubled over the past 50 to 60 years.

She attributes this to generational shifts in habits, such as moving from a weekly shared bath for a family to individuals taking multiple showers a week, or even daily.

Households are responsible for nearly 60% of water usage across England and Wales. Russell suggests that if domestic water consumption patterns mirrored those in Denmark, more than half of the projected shortfall for 2055 could be avoided.

Russell further calculates that even with anticipated population growth, if everyone in England were to shorten their shower by just one minute, this simple change could conserve almost one billion litres of water daily by 2050.

Nevertheless, water companies have launched campaigns encouraging reduced water usage, seemingly with limited success.
