Vinka's Lugogo concert marked a new beginning, not an end

For many years, VERONICA NAKIYINGI, also known as Vinka, observed the music business from an insider's perspective, initially as a dancer and subsequently as an artist manager.

Last Friday marked a significant milestone in her professional life as she headlined her own concert. The Vinka Live & Loud event, held at Lugogo Cricket Oval, was a resounding success.

Quick Talk sat down with the musician to discuss her career path in music, the valuable lessons she has learned, the impact of fame, her family life, and her plans for the future.

Beneath the stage name Vinka is Veronica Nakiyingi, a devoted mother, a shrewd businesswoman, and a woman who dedicates immense effort behind the scenes. She is grounded, fiercely loyal to her loved ones and team, and notably more composed than the fiery performer audiences witness under the spotlight.

She recalled being an energetic, dance-loving child who could never sit still. She clarified that while she wasn't actively seeking trouble, she was undeniably resolute in her passion for music and dance.

Whenever there was a performance at school or in her neighborhood, she was always at the center of the action.

The interviewer inquired if, during her childhood, she ever envisioned a future where thousands of people would be singing her songs back to her.

Vinka explained that she always dreamed of a career in entertainment, but admitted that experiencing an entire stadium or arena singing her lyrics verbatim still felt surreal. She recounted that while starting her career behind the scenes as a dancer and later as an artist manager, she had observed this phenomenon happen for others, noting that she began singing around the time Irene Ntale, whom she initially managed at Swangz Avenue, departed. She described it as a true blessing to now experience it as the lead artist.

The interviewer then asked if the distinct personality she exhibits on stage is the same Vinka once the music stops.

She clarified that Vinka on stage is fearless, edgy, full of energy, and completely uninhibited. However, off stage, Veronica is much quieter, relaxed, and cherishes simple moments at home with her family. She added that as soon as the boots and stage makeup are removed, she reverts to a state of peace and quiet.

The interviewer sought to know one common misconception people hold about her due to her fame.

Vinka stated that people often perceive her as intimidating or unapproachable, attributing this to her intense stage presence and husky voice. She countered that, in reality, she is very friendly and enjoys a good laugh.

The interviewer noted that she has performed in numerous shows over the years and inquired what made this particular concert different for her.

She revealed that this was her very first headline concert, stating that every stage she had graced throughout her career had served as preparation for this moment. She emphasized that Live & Loud was not merely another show, but rather a celebration of her entire journey, her personal growth, and the profound connection she shares with her fans.

She expressed her fondness for dynamic stage energy, saying that sharing the stage with formidable African female artists like Yemi Alade or Tiwa Savage would be electrifying.

She also mentioned that, locally, having fellow artists who have supported her journey join her on stage would bring a sense of completion to the moment.

The interviewer pointed out the significant support she has received from various sectors in Uganda and asked about her experience with brands coming on board to endorse her.

She described the experience as profoundly humbling, adding that having major industry players support her vision meant everything to her. She noted that these brands celebrate the way people enjoy themselves and unite, which she felt was very much aligned with her identity as an artist, as she is all about authenticity.
