Musonda Secures Victory, Zambian Golfers Dominate Uganda Open

Joseph Cwinya-ai demonstrated improved performance over the competition's concluding two days, securing a third-place finish.

Dominic Musonda's performance in the fourth and final round of the Uganda Open was not his strongest, but it was largely unnecessary for his victory. At one point, during the first nine holes, he enjoyed a comfortable ten-stroke lead. The electrical engineering student's triumph, effectively sealed after his impressive 64 on Thursday, remained secure even when fellow Zambian Gilbert Chalwe mounted a late challenge.

Musonda secured the Johnnie Walker Uganda Open Amateur title on Friday afternoon, concluding with a nine-under par score. His final tally was three strokes superior to Chalwe's. Representing Nkana Golf Club in Zambia's Copperbelt region, Musonda will particularly cherish this achievement, especially after losing to Uganda's Joseph Cwinya-ai in last year's tournament held at Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club.

Cwinya-ai concluded the event in third place after delivering stronger rounds on the final two days, though he will likely lament his weaker performances on Tuesday and Wednesday, which diminished his chances of retaining the title. His score of 70 propelled him to third, surpassing Joseph Kasozi by one stroke, who progressively faltered after an impressive start.

Among the other Ugandans who reached the top 10 on the leaderboard were Lawrence Walakira, whose two-under 70 included seven birdies, along with Joel Okoth, John Musiimenta, Godfrey Kambale, and Sande Lulet. The only other non-Ugandan competitor was Musamba Kapoma, another Zambian, who shared fifth place with Musiimenta, Okoth, and Walakira.

The most remarkable shot of the day was achieved by Ignatious Twesigye, who scored a hole-in-one on the fourth hole. This marked his inaugural ace and validated his decision to participate in the Open, despite the challenging rounds he endured over the four-day event. Twesigye executed a precise 50-degree wedge shot directly into the flag's base.

On Saturday, the B group golfers will complete the subsidiary portion of the tournament, preceding what is anticipated to be an impressive prize-giving ceremony to honour Musonda and other standout golfers from the four days of competitive play.
