Musonda becomes first Zambian to win Uganda Amateur Open
Dominic Musonda made history on Friday, becoming the inaugural Zambian champion of the prestigious Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateur Golf Open. While Zambians have won three Professional Opens recently, the amateur title had remained elusive until now.

Kampala, Uganda | PHILLIP CORRY | Dominic Musonda made history Friday when he became the first Zambian winner of the prestigious Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateur Golf Open title.
While Zambians have won three of the last 12 Professional Open titles, the amateur’s event has been out of reach – until Musonda arrived last year. He showed what he is capable of last year as runners-up, but this year he took charge after day 2 and did not look back.
Musonda went into the final day with an emphatic 6-stroke lead, securing the 94th Johnnie Walker Amateur Open title at the Uganda Golf Club today with scores of 72, 68, 64,75, for a total of 9-under-par 279.
“I thank the Almighty God for this opportunity to participate in this wonderful event,” he said after his historic victory.
He revealed the Zambians came determined to change the tide in this year’s open. “I thank my Zambian friends who travelled with me to Uganda. We were under pressure from the time we arrived,” he said.
His compatriot Gilbert Chalwe, who led day two, finished 3 strokes off his countryman with a score of 6 under par, 282, while last year’s winner Joseph Cwinyaai finished third with a score of 2 over par 290
Day 1 leader Joseph Kasozi was fourth with a score of 3 over par 291 .
The top 10 amateurs at the Open will play next week in the Pro Open.
